A tag is a free-form label on a person, like VIP, Bilingual, or Attended 2026. This article covers where tags come from and how to keep them tidy.
Where tags come from
- On a person's profile, in the Tags card.
- From an import of your lists from Mailchimp, Flodesk, or Campaign Monitor, and from a CSV file with a tags column.
- In bulk, from the People list or a list's member view (see below).
One set of tags, everywhere
A tag belongs to the person, not to a list. Tag someone in People and the tag shows beside their name on every email list they are on, and every list can filter by it. Rename or delete a tag on the Tags page and it changes in People and on every list at once.
Edit one person's tags
- Go to People and open the person.
- Find the Tags card on their profile.
- Type a tag and press Enter to add it. Click the × on a tag to remove it.
The Tags page
Open People > Tags in the sidebar. Every tag in your workspace is listed with the number of people who carry it. Click a count to see those people. Use the search box to find a tag and click the Tag or People header to sort.
Rename and merge
- Click the pencil on a tag to rename it. Everyone who has it gets the new name.
- If the new name is a tag that already exists, Studio tells you how many people each has and asks before it merges them. Everyone with either tag ends up with one tag, never two copies.
- Case variants are one tag: VIP and vip count together. Renaming VIP to vip just fixes the spelling for everyone.
- The spelling you type wins.
- To merge several tags at once, check them and click Merge, then type a new name or pick one of them.
Delete a tag
The trash icon removes the label from everyone who has it, including archived people. It never deletes a person, never changes an email list, and cannot be undone.
Tag people in bulk
On the People list, and on the member view of any email list, check the rows you want and click Add tag or Remove tag. When every row on the page is checked, Select all matching reaches the people on other pages that match your current search and filters. If a tag already exists in a different capitalization, Studio uses that spelling and skips people who already have it.
Tags are not consent
Tagging someone never adds them to an email list and never changes their subscription. Studio only emails people who subscribed to a list. Save as list on a list's member view copies only the subscribers who match the tag filter, not everyone who carries the tag.
